Desk Diners In The UK Hit 12 Million1

Rushed and skipped lunches take their toll on nation's bowels

It is not only what we eat that could be affecting our health, but also the way we eat it. Thirteen million of us eat our lunch in under 15 minutes, nearly 4 million of us eat lunch on the run and a further 5 million tend to skip lunch altogether 1. By not giving our body time to relax while we eat, or missing regular meals, we are putting our digestive system under more pressure to perform and risk disrupting its natural balance. By doing this, we expose ourselves to symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, wind, diarrhoea and constipation.

Bowel health problems in the UK are probably more prevalent than we think, with one third of all adults suffering from symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) at some point in their lives2. IBS is a digestive disorder that causes recurrent abdominal pain and intermittent diarrhoea, often alternating with constipation. Both constipation and diarrhoea are also common bowel problems in the UK generally. Constipation affects up to 30% of the population at any one time3 and just over 13 million are dealing with diarrhoea annually4.

To help address this issue, IMODIUM® has teamed up with bowel health charity CORE (formerly the Digestive Disorders Foundation) and dietitian Lyndel Costain to educate consumers about how they can improve the health of their bowels and how to tackle some common bowel health problems. As part of this move, they are launching a free new guide to looking after your bowels called 'Healthy Bowels. Healthy You.' This new guide can be obtained by calling 0800 197 0797 or visiting www.imodium.co.uk/healthybowels.

Dr Alastair Forbes, spokesperson for CORE said, "It is fascinating to learn exactly how many people rush their lunch or don't stop to eat at all. It is clear that the pace at which we lead our lives is having effects on our eating habits, but the magnitude of this is nonetheless surprising. I strongly suspect that if we don't take greater care with our dietary habits, and soon, that more bowel problems will be inevitable. People need to know how to take better care of their bowels and how to manage problems when they arise."

Registered dietitian Lyndel Costain adds, "Many people don't realise the effect that diet, stress and the way we live day to day, can have on the health and function of our bowels. A natural balance exists within our bowels and when the balance is upset, we can end up with problems such as bloating, constipation or diarrhoea. By understanding more about how our bowels work and how lifestyle can affect them, we can take better care of them."

Treating diarrhoea
When something upsets your digestive system it can cause a reduction in the natural balance of nutrients and water absorption in your bowels. In turn, this can lead to watery, loose stools passed more frequently than normal, known as diarrhoea.

IMODIUM® contains loperamide, which works to restore normal bowel movement, leading to enhanced absorption of fluids and nutrients back into your body and more normal stool consistency. IMODIUM® can relieve diarrhoea, and so help shorten the bout and reduce the disruption to your life. By restoring the balance, you can feel better sooner, with the confidence to get on and take control of your day.

IMODIUM® Plus Caplets* contain a unique combination of loperamide and simethicone, which helps to stop diarrhoea as well as relieve associeted symptoms of cramps, wind and bloating. IMODIUM® Plus Caplets are an easy-to-swallow caplet format, available from pharmacies, grocers and supermarkets nationwide in a smaller and more convenient 6-pack format.

IMODIUM® Instants* are particularly suitable for acute bouts of diarrhoea experienced whilst out and about, because they melt on the tongue in seconds without the need for water, leaving a pleasant mint aftertaste. They can be taken anytime, anywhere. IMODIUM® Instants can stop diarrhoea with just one dose and are available in a convenient 6 pack from pharmacies, convenience stores, grocers and supermarkets nationwide.

*IMODIUM® Instants contain loperamide. IMODIUM® Plus Caplets contain loperamide and simethicone. Always read the leaflet.
