Acute diarrhoea treatment during menstruation, a phase of the menstrual cycle.
family montage Is it a Menstrual Issue?

Menstruation and diarrhoea
Most people are aware of irritability and depression as a symptom of their monthly period. However, there is less awareness that the menstrual cycle can also be linked to a bout of acute diarrhoea. This section explains how your menstrual cycle can lead to a bout of diarrhoea and recommends a suitable treatment to help you. Now you can get on with your day with one less thing to worry about.

The condition
It is fairly common to experience a bout of acute diarrhoea when you have your monthly period. Approximately a third of women, who do not otherwise have bowel complaints, experience gastrointestinal symptoms around the time of menstruation – typically gas, diarrhoea or constipation. The most common of these is diarrhoea – experienced by 19% of women1.

For women with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) the problem can be exacerbated. Between 32% and 45% of women who suffer from IBS complain of diarrhoea around the time of their period2.

Why does it happen?
Unfortunately the reason for increased bowel complaints at the time of menstruation is unfortunately not clear. It has been suggested that increased levels of the hormone 'progesterone', which is produced at this time, causes changes in the way the muscles in the gut wall contract (peristalsis). It has also been suggested that a chemical called 'prostaglandin', released by the uterus at the time of menstruation, might also cause diarrhoea. These chemicals are known to be powerful stimulants of muscle contractions in the gut3.
