Staying Healthy - How Do You Do It?
Welcome to the Imodium travel health section. This section will help explain the issues surrounding travel health, provide some useful travel preparation tips, and it will also give you a more in-depth look at travellers' diarrhoea, which is still the most common health condition when travelling abroad.
Although some 20 million people travel abroad on holiday each year, many of these travellers still underestimate the health risks they face. In fact it seems that people prepare for the unlikely rather than the more common holiday health risks.
New research has shown that British holidaymakers are more likely to take out holiday insurance against unlikely disasters than to prepare for more common health problems, even though such ailments could potentially ruin their holiday.
Of the estimated 7 million people who fall ill on holiday each year, 80% of illnesses are stomach related1. Yet despite these high statistics, research shows that only 40% of holidaymakers bother to pack an anti-diarrhoeal2. On the other hand 74% of travellers take out travel insurance (predominantly medical) but only 10% actually use it2.
There's no doubt that lost luggage or cancellations can ruin a holiday and so insurance is vital. Yet a common ailment such as diarrhoea can just as easily spoil your stay. It is estimated that if you get diarrhoea whilst on holiday, you can end up confined to your room for up to 15% of your holiday time3 that's more than two days in a two week break!
Your holiday is something you look forward to and an experience you should enjoy, whether you're looking to relax and unwind or to party the night away and have fun. The worst many holidaymakers will experience on their travels is a touch of tummy trouble, but things can be very uncomfortable if you don't take the appropriate precautions and plan ahead for a more healthy holiday.
